About Sundown for Mac

Sundown for Mac is a menu bar app that makes your screen warmer and dimmer after dark. It is made by Jack Richards and sold directly here, at trysundown.com.

What it does

You choose how warm the screen should be from the menu bar, or build a schedule so it warms through the evening on its own. Its flicker-free mode holds the built-in display’s backlight at full power and does the dimming in software, and on Apple silicon Sundown can also switch off the temporal dithering that some people see as a faint shimmer.

Dr. Alexander Wunsch tested Sundown, and at its deep warmth settings it eliminates blue light. We tested the flicker-free mode on an oscilloscope, and it removes screen flicker. Both tests are written up in how we tested Sundown.

Who makes it

Sundown is made by Jack Richards. He also writes for the Sundown blog, and his articles are collected on his author page. Questions about the app reach us at support@trysundown.com.

Which Macs it runs on

  • macOS 26 Tahoe, 15 Sequoia and 14 Sonoma: Sundown, the main download.
  • macOS 13 Ventura and 12 Monterey: Sundown Classic, a separate build for those versions.
  • Both builds run on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Nothing earlier than macOS 12 is supported.
  • There is also an early version for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11.

What it costs

Sundown costs $4.99 a month, $39 a year, or $79 once for a lifetime licence. The monthly and annual plans start with a 7-day free trial, so you get a week of evenings with it before the first charge. See the plans.
