Who this is for

  • You are on macOS 12 or 13. The normal download will not open on your Mac. This one will.
  • You already bought Sundown and could not run it. Your licence key works here. There is nothing to buy again.
  • You are on macOS 14 or later. Use the main app. Classic is behind it on features and there is no reason to run it.

What is in this build

Sundown Classic 1.6.0 was cut from Sundown as it stood on 3 September 2026. It is the essential Sundown for older Macs; newer features arrive as they are ported.

  • •Warmth from the menu bar, on the Kelvin ladder from 6500 K down to 500 K.
  • •Brightness that dims through the gamma curve instead of the backlight.
  • •Anti-dithering for the gamma banding Apple Silicon Macs show at low warmth.
  • •A schedule you build yourself — day parts, with the steps you choose.
  • •One-tap presets, and keyboard shortcuts for warmth and brightness.
  • •Insights: what Sundown applied, and when.
  • •The same licence and the same 7-day trial as the main app.
  • •Automatic updates, from the same update feed.

What is not in it yet

Everything that landed in Sundown 1.5.0 after that cut is missing here: Sound Studio, the four looks for the brightness pop-up, and the new Home tab. Warmth, dimming, scheduling and your licence are all present. The rest is ported over time, and Classic updates through the same feed when it is.

First release for older Macs

Read this before you install. Sundown Classic is signed and notarized by Apple, and it is built from the same source as the app everyone else runs — but we have not run it ourselves on a Monterey or Ventura machine. We develop and test on macOS 14 and later. It is going out now because the people on 12 and 13 asked for it rather than waiting.

So: if something does not work, tell us. That is the fastest way it gets fixed, and it is the only way we find out.

Your licence and the install

Sundown Classic uses the same licence system as the main app — the same key, the same activation, the same checkout. If you already own Sundown, your existing licence works: enter the key you were emailed. If you do not, the 7-day trial and the usual plans are the same ones.

  1. 1.Open the DMG and drag Sundown to Applications.
  2. 2.Launch Sundown from Applications. It lives in the menu bar.
  3. 3.Enter your licence key, or start the trial.
